CBD remains strictly prohibited in food products in Belgium
The Federal Public Service (SPF) Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment recently reiterated an important rule regarding the consumption of CBD. In Belgium, as in the rest of the European Union, the addition of cannabidiol (CBD) to foodstuffs is strictly prohibited.
This ban applies to all food products and nutritional supplements that contain CBD, whether they are oils, drinks, or other derived ingredients. The Belgian authorities specify that no ingredient based on this substance has received the necessary authorization to be marketed in the food sector.
Health authorities have expressed concerns regarding the effects of this substance on consumer health. In the absence of sufficient scientific evidence regarding long-term safety, the precautionary principle is being applied. Consequently, food products enriched with CBD do not comply with current food safety standards.
Consumers are therefore urged to exercise caution when making purchases. It is advised to carefully check the composition of products and not to consume foods containing CBD, as these items do not comply with Belgian and European legislation on food safety.
