Today's Essentials: Flooding in Jemeppe and Roadworks in Liège
Heavy storms have caused flooding and property damage in the province of Namur, while significant disruptions are expected starting this Monday in transport and public services across several Walloon municipalities. Between water outages and road closures, residents are urged to remain vigilant.
The Jemeppe-sur-Sambre region was hit by heavy rainfall during the night from Saturday to Sunday. Firefighters from the Val de Sambre and Namur-Gembloux zones responded to flooded homes. On the E42 motorway, a tree falling on a vehicle was also reported. These events follow a series of storms that had already weakened the area.
In Morlanwelz, despite ongoing water outages, the municipality has announced that schools and the nursery will remain open this Monday. Municipal services and the CPAS (public social welfare center) will operate normally. To follow the progress of repair work, authorities are directing residents to the website of the Société wallonne des eaux (SWDE).
In Liège, a major construction project begins this Monday, June 22, on the access ramp to the Cointe tunnel. This lane will remain closed until August 4, which is likely to cause significant traffic disruptions. Local police advise avoiding the area for the duration of the works.
Finally, recent dry weather caused several fires this weekend. In Doische, one hectare of meadow was destroyed by flames in Matagne-la-Grande. In Houyet, a fire broke out Sunday morning in a tourist accommodation in the town center, where occupants attempted to control the blaze before the arrival of firefighters from the Dinaphi zone.
