More commuting accidents in the Belgian public sector
A recent report by Medex, the federal government's medical service, shows a striking increase in the number of workplace accidents within the public sector. The new figures reveal that more than one in four accidents occur during commuting. This is the journey employees take to get to work or to return home.
Since 2016, the number of accidents on the way to work has risen by 17 percent. This trend is a cause for concern for the authorities, as commuting constitutes a large part of the daily risks for employees. The figures highlight the importance of road safety for civil servants and other employees in the public sector.
The financial impact of these accidents is significant. In the past period, Medex has paid out 14.8 million euros in compensation to employees involved in a workplace accident. These amounts serve to cover the costs of medical care and loss of income for the victims.
The government is using this new infographic to map out the situation and create awareness. The goal is to better inform employees and employers about the risks. By gaining insight into where and when most accidents occur, they hope to be able to take more preventive measures in the future to improve road safety.
