Belgium activates its alert plan in response to heatwave and ozone pollution
The Risk Management Group (RMG) officially activated the alert phase of the Ozone and Heatwave Plan on June 23, 2026. This decision comes as temperatures are rising rapidly across Belgian territory, leading to a deterioration in air quality.
The alert phase is triggered when weather forecasts predict episodes of intense heat combined with high concentrations of ozone in the atmosphere. This phenomenon, often linked to strong sunlight, can have direct consequences on the health of citizens.
Authorities recommend that the population, and particularly the most vulnerable such as children, the elderly, and those suffering from respiratory illnesses, remain very vigilant. It is advised to limit intense physical exertion outdoors, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
To protect yourself, it is also essential to drink water regularly, stay in cool places, and keep windows closed during the day to prevent heat and polluted air from entering homes. Health services remain mobilized to monitor the evolution of the situation over the coming days.
