Why is the spare wheel disappearing from our cars in Belgium?

Many Belgian motorists have noticed a significant change when purchasing a new vehicle: the classic spare wheel has disappeared. It is now being replaced by repair kits or special tires, a trend that is raising concerns among drivers and consumer advocacy groups.

This phenomenon, sometimes referred to as the "puncture business," was recently addressed in the Federal Parliament. Car manufacturers justify this decision by citing a desire to reduce vehicle weight in order to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Furthermore, it allows for a slight increase in available trunk space.

However, this development poses a real problem in the event of significant tire damage. Unlike a traditional spare wheel, repair kits do not always allow you to get back on the road after a tear or a violent impact to the sidewall of the tire. In these situations, the driver is often forced to call a tow truck, which leads to additional costs.

Currently, no Belgian or European law requires manufacturers to include a spare wheel in new models. The authorities are studying the issue to determine whether regulation is necessary to protect citizens. In the meantime, buyers are advised to carefully check the included equipment before signing a sales contract.
