Record Heat in Europe and Deadly Earthquakes
An exceptional heatwave is moving toward Belgium as several neighboring countries record record-breaking temperatures. On an international scale, military tensions are worsening in the Middle East and Ukraine, while two major earthquakes have caused significant loss of life in Venezuela and Afghanistan.
Prepare for high temperatures as a mass of scorching air progresses toward our regions. On Saturday, Germany, Denmark, and the Czech Republic broke their historical records with temperatures reaching 41.5°C. This intense heatwave continues to move toward northern Europe, impacting local weather conditions.
At the same time, international security is marked by an escalation of tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran. Exchanges of strikes took place following accusations of violations of the nuclear agreement by Washington. While Tehran committed to reducing its enriched uranium in exchange for the lifting of sanctions, the IAEA (the nuclear watchdog agency) is now demanding very thorough verifications to prevent any military escalation.
This climate of instability is also affecting Eastern Europe, where Crimea has been placed under a state of emergency. The peninsula annexed by Russia is suffering from severe fuel shortages following Ukrainian attacks, while the Russian defense claims to have shot down several drones targeting Moscow. These direct clashes maintain strong pressure on regional security and energy resources.
Finally, two natural disasters struck on Saturday. In Venezuela, two earthquakes left at least 920 dead and 50,000 missing; however, a newborn was rescued from the rubble after 32 hours. Further east, Afghanistan was also shaken by a magnitude 6.1 earthquake, according to the US institute USGS.
