Heatwave in Europe: Records and Health Alerts
Europe is facing an exceptional heatwave causing record-breaking temperatures and a rise in mortality, particularly in Spain. Simultaneously, maritime security is being disrupted by incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and the Mediterranean. Here are the key news highlights for this Friday.
This intense heatwave, which has placed two-thirds of France on maximum alert, is leading to increased health risks for the population. With a record 36.4°C for the month of June in France and peaks expected in Germany, authorities are warning against heatstroke and cardiovascular events, the frequency of which increases as the episode persists. In Spain, 212 deaths have already been attributed to these extreme temperatures in just four days. As a precaution, certain events such as the Changing of the Guard in London have been canceled to protect the troops.
While temperatures climb on land, maritime security is under surveillance following the interception of a Russian tanker by the French Navy in the Mediterranean for violating the law of the sea. Additionally, in the Strait of Hormuz (a strategic maritime passage between Iran and Oman), a vessel was struck by an unknown projectile. Thousands of sailors are currently stranded there, and the UN expects it will take several weeks to organize their safe evacuation.
