CBD in food: a strict ban in Belgium and Europe

The Federal Public Service (FPS) Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment recently reiterated an important rule regarding the consumption of CBD. To date, no food product containing cannabidiol (CBD) is authorized on the Belgian or European market. Although this substance is often presented as a "natural" ingredient with beneficial effects, it does not have any official authorization to be added to our food or drinks.

Health authorities emphasize that CBD is considered a "novel food" under European regulations. For such a product to be sold legally, it must first undergo a rigorous scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). This procedure aims to ensure that the product is safe for consumer health before it is placed on the market.

The FPS Health expresses real concerns regarding the potential risks associated with the ingestion of CBD. In the absence of sufficient scientific data on long-term effects, the authorities prefer to adopt a precautionary approach. The sale of food products enriched with CBD is therefore strictly prohibited, and controls are being stepped up to protect Belgian citizens.

Consumers are advised to remain vigilant regarding products sold online or in certain shops that claim to contain CBD. In case of doubt about the composition of a food product, it is recommended to check the official information from food safety agencies. Public health remains the absolute priority for the Belgian authorities in this matter.
