The Belgian army relaxes its medical criteria to attract new recruits
Faced with a personnel shortage, the Belgian Defense has decided to modernize its recruitment procedures. Starting in the coming months, medical examinations for joining the army will evolve to become more inclusive while still ensuring the safety of military operations.
Currently, many candidates are turned away for minor health reasons that do not actually prevent the performance of military duties. The authorities now wish to assess aptitudes in a more comprehensive manner. The goal is to allow more citizens to join the ranks, particularly for technical or administrative positions where perfect physical condition is not always necessary.
This reform is part of a broader plan aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the Belgian army in an uncertain European geopolitical context. The Ministry of Defense hopes to fill numerous vacant positions and rejuvenate its workforce, while adapting to current medical standards in the labor market.
Interested candidates will soon be able to consult the new criteria on the official Defense website. This measure represents an opportunity for young Belgians who wish to serve their country but who were previously held back by medical rules deemed too strict.
