Should children in Belgium be raised bilingually from daycare?
A striking proposal by Professor Els Consuegra of the VUB is stirring up the education debate. She suggests starting bilingual education throughout Belgium as early as daycare. According to her, it is very natural for young children to learn multiple languages simultaneously because their brains are still very flexible at that stage.
In Belgium, language is often a sensitive topic, but Consuegra emphasizes that early language acquisition offers many benefits. Children who come into contact with a second language at a young age often develop a better sense of language and more self-confidence. In the long term, this could bridge the gap between the various linguistic communities in our country.
However, the proposal also raises questions regarding practical implementation. Critics point out that there is already a major staff shortage in childcare. Furthermore, it is questionable whether there are enough qualified caregivers who can look after children in two languages. The quality of education and the balance between the languages also remain important points of attention for policymakers.
Nevertheless, the idea is receiving support from experts who believe in the power of multilingualism. In a globalized world, knowledge of different languages is a major asset for the future of young people. The debate on how we can organize this within the Belgian context is thus back in the spotlight.
Whether the proposal will actually be implemented remains unclear. The political discussion regarding education and language remains complex in Belgium. For now, it remains an interesting proposal that further fuels the discussion about the future of our education system.
