Ursula von der Leyen denies rumors about a future NATO post
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has officially put an end to speculation regarding her political future. For several weeks, rumors had been circulating in European media suggesting that she might leave her current position to take the helm of NATO.
These whispers were dismissed by the individual herself. In a recent statement, Ms. von der Leyen affirmed that she has no intention of seeking the secretary-generalship of the military organization. She intends to focus fully on her duties at the head of the European executive.
This clarification is important for the political stability of the European Union, at a time when there are numerous current geopolitical challenges. The Commission President therefore remains focused on the EU's priority files, notably the energy transition and support for Ukraine.
For Belgian and European observers, this announcement closes a chapter of speculation that had lasted for several months. The question of the succession at the head of NATO, however, remains a major topic of discussion within international chancelleries, as the current secretary-general's term is soon coming to an end.
