Belgium and the world: between major urban projects, summer weather and sports news
In Belgium, the news is marked by a difficult political decision regarding transport in Brussels. Elke Van den Brandt, the Minister for Mobility, explained that the Metro 3 project had to be put on hold. Despite years of work, the government took this decision with regret, representing a major change for the capital's future.
Meanwhile, the beautiful weather is drawing crowds to the coast. For this first day of the long Pentecost weekend, many Belgians headed to the seaside to enjoy blue skies and temperatures close to 30 degrees. In Brussels, the city center is also coming back to life with the revival of the Halles Saint-Géry market. After more than a century, ten artisans, including butchers and bakers, are setting up shop there to offer local products to residents.
In the Charleroi region, an impressive fire broke out this Saturday at a sorting center in Couillet. The fire, which started in a storage area, is now under control and train traffic has been able to resume normally. Abroad, another piece of violent news concerns sports: former Formula 1 champion Alain Prost was the victim of a burglary at his home in Switzerland. The driver was slightly injured in the face during the assault.
Still on the subject of logistics, a visit to the largest sorting center in the Benelux, located in Brussels, shows the scale of current commerce. This massive site handles around 300,000 parcels every day. On the other hand, a more worrying image comes from Liège: in Coronmeuse, turtles were seen swimming amidst waste in the eco-district's dock. The Autonomous Port of Liège is currently considering solutions to clean the water and protect the environment.
The world of football is also in motion with the upcoming departure of Pep Guardiola from Manchester City. The Spanish coach said he was very touched by a message from Kevin De Bruyne, highlighting the importance of their relationship. In the world of tennis, the future is already being prepared. After a historic 2025 edition at Roland-Garros with Rafael Nadal's farewell, experts are wondering if the 2026 tournament can be just as exciting and spectacular.
Finally, the famous singer Phil Collins has given reassuring news to his fans. Although he will soon be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, he has decided not to sing during the ceremony in November. He explained that he preferred not to take the stage if he was not at the top of his form, while asserting that he is now in better health than ever.
