Belgium activates its alert plan in response to heatwave and ozone pollution
The Risk Management Group (RMG) officially activated the alert phase of the Ozone and Heatwave Plan in Belgium on June 23, 2026. This preventive measure comes as temperatures rise significantly across the entire territory, leading to a degradation in air quality.
The rise in temperatures promotes the formation of ground-level ozone, a gas that can be irritating to the respiratory tract. Health authorities remind the public that this situation can particularly affect vulnerable individuals, such as children, the elderly, or those suffering from chronic respiratory diseases.
As part of this plan, the population is strongly advised to adopt appropriate behaviors. It is recommended to drink water regularly, stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day, and avoid intense physical exertion outdoors. It is also advised to keep windows and shutters closed during the day to keep homes cool.
Authorities continue to closely monitor the development of the meteorological situation and pollution levels. The public is invited to regularly consult official public health websites to obtain the latest recommendations and follow the progress of the alert in their region.
