Belgium activates its alert plan in response to heatwave and ozone pollution

The Risk Management Group (RMG) officially activated the alert phase of the Ozone and Extreme Heat Plan on June 23, 2026. This preventive measure has been triggered due to weather forecasts predicting high temperatures and significant ozone concentrations in the air across the entire Belgian territory.

The rise in temperatures, combined with strong sunlight, promotes the formation of ground-level ozone. This gas can cause respiratory irritation, headaches, or unusual fatigue. Health authorities are therefore calling on citizens to be vigilant, particularly the most vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, and those suffering from chronic illnesses.

To limit risks, it is advised to reduce intense physical exertion outdoors, especially during the hottest hours of the day, between noon and 8 p.m. It is also recommended to drink water regularly, stay in cool places, and keep homes protected from the heat by closing windows and shutters during the day.

Authorities will continue to monitor air quality and the evolution of weather conditions over the coming days. The public is invited to regularly check official public health websites for updates on the situation and to follow the health recommendations in effect.
