CBD remains strictly prohibited in food in Belgium
The Federal Public Service (FPS) Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment reminded Belgian consumers of an important rule this week: CBD, or cannabidiol, cannot be used in food products. This ban applies to all CBD-based ingredients, whether they are food supplements, beverages, or food items.
According to health authorities, this decision is based on safety concerns. Currently, CBD is not authorized as a "novel food" at the European level. This means that there is not yet enough scientific evidence to guarantee that the regular consumption of these products is safe for human health.
In Belgium, controls are strict. Food products containing CBD are considered non-compliant with European and national legislation. Consequently, their sale in supermarkets, grocery stores, or specialty shops is illegal. Authorities are asking retailers to remove these items from their shelves to protect citizens.
For consumers, caution is therefore advised. It is recommended to carefully check the composition of purchased products and to avoid any food or food supplement that mentions the presence of CBD. In case of doubt, citizens can consult the official FPS Health website to obtain updated information on authorized substances.
