Belgian biopharma sector must innovate to remain a world leader
The Belgian biopharma sector currently still enjoys an excellent reputation on the world stage. Our country is known for its innovation and high-quality production in the pharmaceutical industry. Nevertheless, experts warn that we must not rest on our laurels if we want to maintain this strong position.
According to economist Marc De Vos, an important change in our mentality is needed. He states that Belgium must 'wake up' to remain relevant in a rapidly changing international market. Competition from other countries is increasing, meaning that standing still is equivalent to falling behind.
To keep the sector healthy, more focus is needed on new technologies and a strategic approach for the future. It is crucial that Belgium invests in research and development so as not to lose the lead we currently have to foreign competitors.
The biopharma sector is an important engine for the Belgian economy and provides a great deal of employment. Preserving this sector is therefore not only important for science, but also for general prosperity in our country.
The coming years will be decisive for Belgium's position. It is now up to the government and companies to work together on a vision that prepares the sector for the challenges of tomorrow.
