Belgium activates its “ozone and heatwave” plan in response to high temperatures
The Federal Public Service for Health has officially activated the alert phase of the “ozone and heatwave” plan across the entire Belgian territory. This decision comes as the country faces a period of exceptionally high temperatures for the season, combined with a significant concentration of ozone in the air.
This is the first time this mechanism has been activated this year. The plan aims to protect the most vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, young children, and people with chronic illnesses, from the risks associated with heatwaves and air pollution.
Health authorities recommend that all citizens remain vigilant. It is advised to drink water regularly, limit intense physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day, and keep homes cool by closing windows and shutters during the daytime.
Air quality is also being closely monitored by experts. High levels of ozone can indeed cause respiratory irritation, headaches, or unusual fatigue. It is therefore recommended that sensitive individuals avoid outdoor sports activities until the situation improves.
The alert phase will remain in effect as long as weather conditions pose a risk to public health. Authorities invite the population to regularly follow news bulletins and official recommendations to get through this heat episode safely.
