Oracle cuts thousands of jobs due to AI investments: what does this mean for the Belgian labor market?
The American technology company Oracle has cut approximately 21,000 jobs worldwide. This sweeping decision stems from the enormous financial pressure the company is experiencing due to the rapid expansion of data centers for artificial intelligence (AI). Oracle is investing billions in infrastructure to support major clients, such as OpenAI, with their AI projects.
Although the news of layoffs at a major player like Oracle is notable, experts in Belgium view the situation differently. According to Agoria, the federal employers' organization for the technology sector, the demand for personnel in the ICT sector in Belgium remains undiminished. There is still a significant shortage of qualified IT specialists in the Belgian labor market.
The shift at Oracle shows how the rise of AI is changing the global economy. Companies have to spend enormous amounts on new technology, which sometimes comes at the expense of the current workforce. At the same time, digitalization ensures that companies in Belgium actually need more people who can work with these new systems.
For the time being, the Belgian ICT sector remains a 'bottleneck profession,' which means there are more vacancies than people to fill them. While developments at international tech giants like Oracle do have an impact on the global market, the local need for technical talent in Belgium remains stable for now.
