CBD remains strictly prohibited in food products in Belgium
The Federal Public Service (FPS) Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment recently reiterated an important rule regarding food safety. In Belgium, as in the rest of the European Union, the addition of CBD (cannabidiol) to foodstuffs is strictly prohibited.
This ban applies to all everyday consumer products, including food supplements, drinks, or snacks that contain CBD-based ingredients. According to health authorities, no product of this type has received official authorization to be placed on the market as food.
Experts emphasize that this measure is primarily a matter of public health. The long-term effects of regular CBD consumption through food are not yet sufficiently documented. Consequently, the authorities prefer to apply the precautionary principle to protect Belgian consumers.
Citizens are therefore advised to be vigilant when making purchases, particularly online or in specialized shops. Products containing CBD cannot be sold as food or food supplements, as they do not meet the strict safety standards imposed by European legislation.
In conclusion, the FPS Health invites consumers to check product labels carefully. If you have any doubts about the composition of an item, it is recommended that you do not consume it and report any suspicious products to the competent authorities.
