Eurovision 2027: Belgium threatens to boycott the contest
The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the most-watched musical events in the world. However, Belgium's participation in the 2027 edition is currently uncertain. VRT, the Flemish public broadcaster, has expressed strong concerns regarding the future organization of the competition.
The main reason for this tension is Israel's participation in the contest. In a recent statement, VRT officially called for an open and transparent debate on this subject before confirming its presence. The Belgian media outlet believes it is necessary to discuss participation criteria to protect the integrity of the event.
In Belgium, the selection of the candidate is unique: it alternates every year between RTBF, for the French-speaking part, and VRT, for the Dutch-speaking part. For the 2027 edition, it is normally VRT's turn to choose the artist who will represent the country on the international stage.
This stance follows the numerous controversies that marked the 2024 edition in Malmö, Sweden. At the time, several delegations and many spectators criticized the management of the contest by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). VRT now wishes to prevent these social and political tensions from recurring.
For the moment, the EBU has not yet officially reacted to this boycott threat. If no agreement is reached or if the requested debate does not take place, Belgium could be absent from the competition in 2027. Fans of the contest are now waiting to see how international organizers will respond to this request.
