CBD in food: an important reminder for Belgian consumers
The Federal Public Service for Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment recently reiterated a strict rule regarding the sale of food products in Belgium. It is currently prohibited to market food or food supplements containing cannabidiol, better known as CBD.
This ban applies not only to finished products but also to all ingredients derived from CBD. According to health authorities, no market authorization has been granted for these substances in human food at the European level. Consequently, these products do not meet the current food safety standards.
Authorities emphasize that the consumption of CBD in food form raises public health concerns. In the absence of sufficient scientific studies on the long-term effects of ingesting these products, the precautionary principle is being applied. Controls are therefore being stepped up to ensure that products sold in Belgian stores comply with the legislation.
For consumers, it is advisable to carefully check the composition of products purchased, particularly online or in specialized shops. If you have any doubts about an item, do not hesitate to consult the official website of the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) for reliable and up-to-date information.
