A Sunday between human drama and historic sporting achievements
In France, two tragic events marked Sunday. In Rennes, police opened a murder investigation after the macabre discovery of a 12-year-old boy's body in a bush. Meanwhile, in Paris, intense heat turned a sporting competition into a disaster. During the "La Pyrénéenne" footrace, one participant died and about ten other runners were hospitalized in critical condition.
In the world of international sport, Olympiakos made history by winning its fourth basketball EuroLeague. The Greek club took its revenge by defeating Real Madrid (92-85) in the final in Athens, thirteen years after its last title. In Portugal, a total surprise occurred during the national cup final: SCU Torreense became the first second-division club to win the trophy by beating Sporting CP.
In Belgium, the football season ends with very different feelings depending on the clubs. Union Saint-Gilloise dominated Anderlecht with a crushing 5-1 victory, leaving the Brussels players frustrated and angry. With the end of the playoffs, the distribution of places for European competitions is now known. Thanks to its eighth place in the UEFA rankings, Belgium will benefit from several European tickets for next season.
On the tennis courts of Roland-Garros, the young Belgian Alexander Blockx experienced a special moment. After receiving compliments from world number one Jannik Sinner during training, the Antwerp native won his first Grand Slam match in front of many Belgian supporters. In field hockey, the suspense was also high: the Watducks club clinched its sixth Belgian championship title thanks to a decisive goal scored in the final minutes of the final.
The day was also marked by the end of a long career. At 35, footballer Guillaume François played his final minutes as a professional after 18 years on the pitch. He expressed his joy at having turned this last match into a true celebration of football. Finally, a serious road accident occurred in Longchamps, where a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a head-on collision with a car during an overtaking maneuver.
