Belgium activates its alert plan in response to heatwave and ozone pollution
The Risk Management Group (RMG) officially activated the alert phase of the Ozone and Extreme Heat Plan on June 23, 2026. This decision comes as temperatures rise across Belgian territory, posing risks to public health.
The rise in temperatures, combined with a high concentration of ozone in the air, can cause respiratory problems, particularly among the most vulnerable individuals. Health authorities are therefore calling on the public to remain vigilant during this period of extreme heat.
Citizens are strongly advised to drink water regularly, even if they do not feel thirsty, and to limit intense physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day. It is also recommended to stay in cool places and to keep windows closed during the day to maintain coolness inside homes.
Elderly people, young children, and those suffering from chronic illnesses require special attention. In the event of symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, or unusual fatigue, it is advised to contact a doctor promptly.
Authorities will continue to monitor the meteorological situation and air quality over the coming days. Citizens are invited to regularly check official websites for updates on the progress of this alert plan.
