Dutch Chinook helicopter operational again after firefighting in Belgium
A Dutch Chinook transport helicopter from Gilze-Rijen Air Base is fully operational again. The helicopter was in Belgium earlier this week to assist in extinguishing a large fire, but encountered a technical problem there on Wednesday evening.
Due to the defect, the helicopter had to remain grounded in Belgium temporarily. This caused a brief interruption in the support the Dutch team was providing to the Belgian emergency services in fighting the fire.
Technicians have since resolved the issue. The Chinook has been inspected and declared safe for use again. The aircraft can now be deployed for tasks in both the Netherlands and Belgium if necessary.
The deployment of the Chinook underscores the strong cooperation between Dutch and Belgian defense and emergency services. In the event of major incidents, such as wildfires, the neighboring countries regularly assist one another to ensure the safety of their citizens.
