Belgium activates its “ozone and heatwave” plan in response to high temperatures
Belgian health authorities have officially activated the alert phase of the “ozone and heatwave” plan. This decision comes as the country experiences a period of exceptionally high temperatures, accompanied by a significant concentration of ozone in the air.
This is the first activation of this mechanism for the current season. The plan aims to protect public health, particularly that of the most vulnerable individuals, such as children, the elderly, and citizens suffering from respiratory problems.
The Interregional Environment Agency emphasizes that air quality is currently degraded. The high heat promotes the formation of ground-level ozone, which can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, or lead to breathing difficulties during physical exertion.
The population is strongly advised to limit intense physical activities outdoors during the hottest hours of the day, generally between noon and 8 p.m. It is also recommended to drink water regularly and stay in cool places as much as possible.
Authorities will continue to monitor the meteorological situation and air quality closely. Citizens are invited to regularly consult official websites for updates on the evolution of these weather conditions and on the precautionary measures to adopt.
