Belgium: activation of the heat and ozone alert plan
The Federal Public Service (FPS) Public Health has announced the activation of the alert phase of the "ozone and high heat" plan across the entire Belgian territory. This decision was made due to the exceptional temperatures forecast for the coming days. This is the first time this year that this emergency measure has been put in place.
Experts explain that this alert is necessary for two main reasons. First, the country is experiencing a period of intense heat. Second, the strong sunlight promotes an increase in ozone concentrations in the air. This gas can become irritating and dangerous for health when its levels are too high, especially during very sunny days.
Authorities are asking the population to be particularly cautious. Children, the elderly, and people suffering from respiratory problems are the most at risk. During this period, it is strongly advised to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day and to avoid intense physical effort outdoors.
To protect oneself effectively, it is essential to follow a few simple tips. Doctors recommend drinking plenty of water, even without feeling thirsty, to avoid dehydration. It is also advised to keep windows and curtains closed during the day to keep homes cool, and then to ventilate thoroughly during the night.
Finally, the alert phase will remain active as long as temperatures and ozone levels stay above critical thresholds. Health services continue to monitor the situation closely to inform citizens. It is recommended to stay attentive to weather reports and to regularly check on isolated or vulnerable people in your surroundings.
