Tensions within the Senegal team: a player suspends his international career
The world of football has been shaken by a strong statement following the match between Belgium and Senegal at the 2026 World Cup. Pape Gueye, a key player for the Senegalese national team, has announced that he is putting his international career on hold. This decision comes immediately after his 45th cap, a significant milestone he reached during this encounter.
The player expressed his deep dissatisfaction regarding the team's management. Substituted during the match, Pape Gueye did not hide his frustration with the tactical choices and the communication of the technical staff. He publicly declared that he would not return to the national team as long as the current management remains in place.
For Belgian supporters and tournament observers, this announcement is a surprise. Pape Gueye was an undisputed starter in Senegal's first two matches of this global competition. His voluntary departure weakens the Senegalese team for the remainder of the tournament, at a time when the sporting stakes are very high.
This situation highlights the tensions that can sometimes arise within locker rooms during intense international competitions. As the 2026 World Cup continues, fans are now waiting to see how the Senegalese federation will react to this internal crisis and whether mediation with the player will be possible.
