Alarm phase of the Ozone and Heat Plan activated in Belgium
The Risk Management Group (RMG) activated the alarm phase of the national Ozone and Heat Plan on June 23, 2026. This decision was made due to the persistent high temperatures and rising ozone concentrations in the air. The plan is intended to protect the health of the Belgian population during this hot period.
The Ozone and Heat Plan comes into effect when weather conditions pose a risk to vulnerable groups. The elderly, young children, and people with health problems in particular should be extra cautious. The government advises drinking plenty of water, avoiding physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day, and keeping the home cool.
In addition, the high ozone concentration can lead to respiratory problems, especially in people who are sensitive to air pollution. It is recommended to keep windows and doors closed during the day and to monitor air quality through official channels. Pets also require extra care and shade during this heat.
The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The plan will remain in effect as long as weather conditions pose a danger to public health. Citizens are urged to look out for one another, especially neighbors or family members who may need extra help during these hot days.
