CBD remains strictly prohibited in food products in Belgium
The Federal Public Service (FPS) Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment recently reiterated an important rule regarding the consumption of CBD-based products in Belgium. It is strictly forbidden to add cannabidiol, better known as CBD, to food or food supplements sold on the Belgian market.
This decision is part of strict European regulation. According to health authorities, CBD is considered a "novel food" that has not yet received the necessary authorizations to be consumed safely. Consequently, no CBD-based ingredient may be included in the composition of products intended for human consumption.
The Belgian authorities express real concerns regarding the effects of these substances on consumer health. In the absence of sufficient scientific studies proving the safety of CBD when ingested regularly, the precautionary principle is being applied. Controls are therefore being stepped up to prevent the sale of non-compliant products in stores and on websites.
It is important to note that this ban specifically concerns food products. Consumers are advised to carefully check the composition of the items they purchase. In case of doubt, the authorities recommend consulting the official information available on the FPS Health website to avoid any health risks.
