NIPT test in Belgium may have broader applications in the future

The NIPT test, which is offered as standard to pregnant women in Belgium, is facing a significant change. Until now, this blood test has been used primarily to detect chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus, such as Down syndrome. In our country, the test is fully reimbursed by health insurance.

New research now indicates that the NIPT may potentially provide more information than just the genetic health of the baby. Scientists are investigating whether the test can also predict whether a pregnant woman is at an increased risk of pregnancy complications. This is particularly relevant for women suffering from an autoimmune disease.

In an autoimmune disease, the body's own immune system attacks healthy cells. During pregnancy, this can create additional risks for both the mother and the child. If the NIPT can demonstrate in the future which women have a higher chance of complications, doctors will be able to monitor these patients more quickly and effectively.

For the time being, however, the NIPT in Belgium remains primarily intended for the detection of genetic abnormalities in the baby. More scientific research is needed before the test can be officially used for these new purposes. As soon as more results are known, the medical community will evaluate whether the guidelines for maternity care in Belgium need to be adjusted.
