Belgium activates ozone and heatwave plan in response to high temperatures
Belgian authorities have officially activated the alert phase of the "Ozone and Heatwave Plan." This decision, announced by the FPS Public Health, follows weather forecasts indicating exceptional temperatures across the entire territory. This is the first time this year that this safety mechanism has been put in place to protect the population.
The activation of this plan is necessary because the combination of intense heat and atmospheric pollution causes an increase in ozone concentrations in the air. Ozone is a gas that can irritate the lungs and cause respiratory problems. This phenomenon often occurs in summer, when the sun is strong and there is not enough wind to disperse pollutants.
To limit health risks, the government recommends following several safety tips. It is advised to drink plenty of water, even when not thirsty, and to stay indoors in cool places during the hottest hours of the day. It is also preferable to avoid intense physical exertion outdoors, such as sports or heavy work, between noon and 8 p.m.
Health services remain vigilant and are monitoring the evolution of the weather situation closely. Citizens are invited to look after vulnerable people, such as children and the elderly, who are more sensitive to dehydration. This alert plan will remain active as long as temperatures and ozone levels pose a risk to public health.
