Belgium activates its heatwave alert plan
The Risk Management Group (RMG) officially activated the alert phase of the Ozone and Excessive Heat Plan in Belgium on June 23, 2026. This preventive measure comes as temperatures are rising rapidly across the entire national territory.
The main objective of this plan is to protect the health of citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, such as children, the elderly, and those suffering from chronic illnesses. Intense heat, combined with high concentrations of ozone in the air, can indeed cause respiratory problems and fatigue.
Authorities recommend that the public remain vigilant. It is advised to drink water regularly, even without feeling thirsty, and to avoid intense physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day. It is also advised to keep homes cool by closing windows and shutters during the day.
The government and health services will continue to monitor the meteorological situation closely. If weather conditions deteriorate further, the plan could be raised to a higher level to further strengthen protective measures for all residents.
