Bolivia faces a political and social crisis as blockades persist and national dialogue continues
Bolivia is experiencing a critical situation due to social mobilizations that have now lasted 26 days. Currently, the city of La Paz is surrounded by blockades that prevent the normal passage of supplies and people. In response to this situation, the government spokesperson has requested the Prosecutor's Office to identify those responsible for a death that occurred last Saturday during the conflicts.
In the legislative sphere, Rodrigo Paz has promulgated the annulment of Law 1341, which regulated the state of exception in the country. This decision has opened an intense debate on how the State should act in the face of protests. For his part, Vice Minister Justiniano assured that the instability generated by these social groups, who demand the president's resignation, directly benefits drug trafficking by weakening institutional control.
The blockades are causing serious humanitarian problems. A mother in El Alto described the effort required to take her sick son to the Children's Hospital as an "odyssey," having to walk long distances under great tension. Likewise, in the Huajchilla area, a group of firefighters and volunteers had to evacuate an elderly woman with a possible pelvic fracture on foot, as emergency vehicles could not circulate through the blocked routes.
To try to resolve the crisis, the Government has called for an Economic and Social Council this Wednesday at the Casa Grande del Pueblo. At the same time, positive progress has been reported between the national government and the Governor's office to lift the blockade in San Julián. A high-level commission will travel to the area to continue negotiations and seek a peaceful solution that allows traffic to normalize.
The popular economy is also suffering the consequences of the instability. Mariachis and other artists who usually work during Mother's Day celebrations report a significant decrease in their contracts. Due to the lack of money and uncertainty, many musicians have had to offer significant discounts to try to attract the few customers who decide to celebrate despite the conflicts.
In the international panorama, tension is increasing in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Russia's representative to the UN has urged foreign citizens and diplomatic personnel to leave the city of Kyiv as soon as possible. According to Russian authorities, this warning is a response to recent attacks carried out by the Ukrainian government.
