Bolivia experiences a day of tension due to blockades, judicial processes, and disinformation
The social situation in Bolivia is critical due to road blockades affecting mainly the cities of La Paz and El Alto. Health workers and doctors have announced a march for this Thursday to demand an end to these measures, as the lack of oxygen, food, and medicine puts patients' lives at risk. An example of this crisis is the story of a mother who had to endure a true "odyssey" to take her sick son to the Children's Hospital, walking long distances to bypass obstacles in the streets.
Faced with this situation, Councilman Yacsik has demanded the immediate lifting of the protests, stating that two million people cannot be "hostages" of a political conflict. At the same time, an important legal debate has arisen following the publication in the Official Gazette of the repeal of Law 1341, which regulated the state of exception. This measure, promoted by Rodrigo Paz, opens the possibility of applying new security strategies to face the blockades, something that productive sectors are demanding.
In the judicial field, a formal indictment has been filed against union leader Juan Carlos Huarachi. With this determination, the start of an oral trial is expected to establish his responsibility for the charges against him. This legal process occurs at a time of great political and social sensitivity for the country.
To try to solve the blockade conflict, several facilitators, including the Catholic Church, are seeking to reactivate the dialogue between the national government and the protesting sectors. The Government ensures that it already has the answers to the demands raised ready. For her part, Senator Tomasa Yarhui emphasized that leaders with real decision-making power must attend these meetings so that the agreements are effective and fulfilled.
Disinformation has also been a serious problem in recent days. The use of artificial intelligence to clone Rodrigo Paz's voice was detected in a video with discriminatory messages against the city of El Alto, which reached thousands of views. Additionally, an old video of former President Evo Morales circulated on social networks and media outlets as if it were a recent recording, contributing to public confusion.
Finally, the local economy shows signs of instability due to the conflicts. In the city of Sucre, a significant increase in the price of potatoes and locoto was reported, with costs tripling recently. However, not all is bad news for consumers' pockets, as a drop in the prices of beef and chicken was recorded, while the price of tomatoes remains stable.
