The Ministry of Regional Development begins an inspection of water utility companies in the country
The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRDPW) is taking serious measures to improve the state of the water sector in Bulgaria. Regional Minister Ivan Shishkov announced that the department is beginning the creation of a detailed map of water losses across the water transmission network.
The main goal of the initiative is to establish the exact condition of the pipes and facilities where the largest quantities of drinking water are being lost. In many regions of the country, losses remain extremely high, which necessitates urgent repairs and modernization of the infrastructure.
In addition to technical issues, the ministry will also investigate the financial management of water operators. Minister Shishkov has requested a full report on all contracts concluded by water utility companies in recent years. The goal is to identify potential "leaks" of money and ensure that funds are spent transparently and efficiently.
The minister warned that if violations are found in the conclusion of contracts or in the expenditure of public funds, the information will be handed over to the prosecutor's office. It is expected that the inspections will lead to new prosecutorial files against the responsible persons.
This initiative is part of the state's broader efforts to stop the waste of resources and ensure higher-quality water supply for Bulgarian citizens. The results of the analysis are expected in the coming months, after which concrete steps will be taken to improve management in the sector.
