Bulgaria to veto sanctions against Russia under a specific condition
Bulgaria has announced that it is prepared to veto new European sanctions against Russia. The decision is linked to the inclusion of Russian Patriarch Kirill in the list of individuals subject to restrictive measures by the European Union.
President Rumen Radev officially stated the country's position on this matter. According to him, if the Patriarch's name remains on the sanctions list, Bulgaria will not support the joint decision of the EU member states. This is a significant step, as any decision on sanctions requires full consensus from all countries in the union.
Including religious leaders in sanctions lists is a delicate topic that sparks various discussions in Europe. The Bulgarian position emphasizes that the country treats issues concerning clergy and religious institutions with particular caution.
At the moment, the situation remains the subject of diplomatic negotiations between Sofia and Brussels. It is expected that in the coming days it will become clear whether a compromise solution will be found that would allow for the adoption of the new sanctions package without Bulgaria's involvement in the blockade.
