Bulgaria prepares for the introduction of a European digital wallet by 2026
The government of Bulgaria has officially approved the necessary steps for the development and implementation of a European digital identity wallet. The decision was made at the last meeting of the Council of Ministers as part of the country's efforts to digitize administrative services.
The goal of this project is to facilitate citizens' access to various services within the European Union. Through a mobile application, users will be able to store their identity documents, diplomas, driver's licenses, and other official certificates in electronic form.
The new system is expected to be fully ready for use by 2026. It will provide a higher level of security for online identification, while simultaneously giving people greater control over the personal data they share in the online space.
The introduction of the digital wallet is part of a broader European initiative for the modernization of public administration. This is expected to reduce bureaucracy and make communication between institutions and citizens faster and more efficient.
In the coming months, state authorities will work on technical preparation and ensuring the compatibility of the Bulgarian system with European standards. The project is seen as an important step toward easier and more secure use of electronic services by all residents of the European Union.
