Medical Services at the Seaside: What Tourists Need to Know
The summer season is in full swing, and thousands of Bulgarians are choosing the native Black Sea coast for their vacation. However, before heading to the seaside, it is important to familiarize yourself with the conditions for medical assistance in the resorts. Tourists are often surprised by the prices and payment methods when an unexpected health problem arises.
In the largest Bulgarian resort, Sunny Beach, ten medical centers are currently operating. The main problem for Bulgarian citizens is that none of these centers work with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). This means that even if you have regularly paid health insurance, you will have to pay for your examination and treatment in cash or by card.
Since these medical centers are private, they set the prices for their services themselves. Visitors should be prepared for higher fees compared to those in large cities in the interior of the country. Medical services in the resorts are often aimed at foreign tourists, which has a significant impact on pricing.
To avoid high costs, experts advise vacationers to research treatment options in advance. In nearby cities such as Nesebar and Burgas, there are state hospitals and centers that have a contract with the NHIF. There, patients can exercise their rights as insured persons and pay only a standard user fee for an examination.
Health is most important, so it is good to plan your vacation carefully. Check where the nearest medical facility that accepts health insurance booklets is located, or consider additional travel insurance. This way, you will be able to enjoy the summer without unnecessary worries and financial surprises.
