The Bulgarian Medical Association proposes stricter control over healthcare funding
The Bulgarian Medical Association (BMA) has come forward with a new proposal to improve financial transparency in the healthcare system. The organization is insisting on the introduction of a real-time control system for public funds allocated for medical services.
The main goal of this initiative is to ensure that every reported and paid activity corresponds to examinations and procedures actually performed. According to the doctors, this will help in the more effective management of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) budget.
Currently, expenditure audits often occur with a delay, which makes it difficult to track potential abuses. Through digitalization and constant monitoring, the union hopes to limit opportunities for the siphoning of funds and to direct resources directly toward patients and quality treatment.
The proposal is part of a broader debate on reforms in Bulgarian healthcare. It is expected that in the coming weeks, institutions will discuss the technical possibilities for implementing such software, which would connect hospitals with regulatory bodies.
If adopted, this measure could significantly change the way activities are reported in hospitals. Patients hope that better control will lead to more accessible and higher-quality medical services across the country.
