Trade unions express serious concerns regarding coal energy reforms
Trade union organizations in Bulgaria have expressed serious concerns regarding the planned reforms in the energy sector. The main focus of the discussions is the future of coal-fired power plants and coal mining, which currently provide base load power for the national electricity system.
According to union representatives, the restructuring process of the coal energy sector carries serious risks for thousands of employees in the industry. The primary concern is related to the possibility of mass layoffs, which would negatively impact social stability in the regions dependent on this sector.
Despite the pressure for an energy transition and the reduction of carbon emissions, the unions emphasize that coal-fired power plants remain a key element for the country's energy independence. They are calling for a clearer plan that guarantees both the security of energy supplies and the protection of the labor rights of those employed in production.
At present, the dialogue between state institutions and union leaders continues. It is expected that in the coming months, specific measures will be presented to balance the European Union's environmental goals with the preservation of jobs and the stability of the Bulgarian energy sector.
