Reforms in Bulgarian Energy: "Maritsa-iztok" to Separate from BEH

Bulgaria is embarking on a significant reform of its energy sector, which is part of the commitments under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). The primary change involves the state-owned companies "Mini Maritsa-iztok" and "TPP Maritsa Iztok 2" exiting the structure of the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH).

This step has been agreed upon with European institutions and aims to improve the management of energy resources in the country. The Bulgarian Energy Holding currently brings together the largest state-owned companies in the sector, but the new rules require greater independence for the individual enterprises.

"Mini Maritsa-iztok" and "TPP Maritsa Iztok 2" are of key importance to the Bulgarian economy and energy security. They provide a large portion of the country's electricity and are major employers in the Stara Zagora region. The reform aims to make their operations more transparent and to facilitate the transition to a more modern energy sector.

The changes are expected to be implemented in 2025. The government emphasizes that this is a necessary condition for receiving financial aid from the European Union. These funds are vital for the modernization of the industry and for supporting regions that depend on the coal industry.

Despite the structural changes, the state will continue to control these strategic assets. The main priority remains ensuring stable electricity prices for consumers and preserving jobs within the energy complex.
