The President handed over the first mandate for forming a government

On May 7, the presidential institution took an important step toward resolving the political situation in the country. Vice President Iliana Iotova officially handed the first exploratory mandate for forming a new government to the largest political force in parliament – the coalition "We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria."

The handing over of the mandate is part of the constitutional procedure that takes place following parliamentary elections. According to Bulgarian legislation, the first mandate is given to the parliamentary group with the largest number of deputies so that they may attempt to find support for a cabinet.

The representatives of the coalition now have a deadline by which they must present the composition of a Council of Ministers or return the mandate unfulfilled. In the coming days, intensive negotiations with the other political forces in the 49th National Assembly will take place to determine whether it is possible to reach an agreement on key priorities for the state.

If the first attempt to form a government proves unsuccessful, the president will have to hand a second mandate to the second-largest political force. This process is of crucial importance for the stability of the country and for the adoption of important laws and the state budget.

The public is following the negotiations closely, as the formation of a regular government is necessary for dealing with economic challenges and for continuing Bulgaria's European integration. It is expected that it will become clear in the shortest possible time whether the country will have a new government or if it will be necessary to hold new elections.
