The European Commission launches eight infringement procedures against Bulgaria
The European Commission has officially announced that it is launching eight infringement procedures against Bulgaria. The decision comes following the established failure to fulfill obligations related to European legislation.
The main reason for these measures is the country's delay in transposing important directives into national law. These are rules that were supposed to be implemented within specific deadlines, but this did not happen on time.
Infringement procedures are a standard mechanism through which Brussels monitors whether all member states are complying with the common rules of the European Union. These letters are the first step in the process, which gives the Bulgarian authorities the opportunity to respond to the criticisms and correct their shortcomings.
If Bulgaria does not take the necessary actions to rectify the situation within a specified period, the Commission may move to the next stages of the procedure. This includes sending reasoned opinions and, as a last resort, referring the matter to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
At the moment, Bulgarian institutions must carefully review the requirements of the European Commission. The goal is for the country to bring its legislation into compliance with European standards in order to avoid more serious sanctions in the future.
