Serious shortage of doctors in emergency care in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is facing a serious shortage of qualified personnel in the emergency medical care system. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, there are only 129 doctors working across the country who hold an official specialty in "Emergency Medicine."

This small number of specialists creates difficulties in providing round-the-clock, high-quality care for patients in critical conditions. The lack of sufficient staff leads to the overloading of working medical professionals and hinders the work of teams responding to emergency calls via the 112 hotline.

Experts point out that the profession is extremely demanding and responsible, which often discourages young doctors. Furthermore, many specialists choose to work in other fields of medicine or seek professional development abroad, where working conditions and pay are more attractive.

The Ministry of Health is looking for ways to improve the situation through various programs to incentivize young doctors. The goal is to attract more staff to emergency departments and ensure better coverage across the entire country so that every citizen can receive timely assistance.

The issue of the doctor shortage remains one of the most important priorities for the Bulgarian healthcare system. Solving this problem requires long-term efforts, investments in the training of new personnel, and improvements to working conditions in emergency centers.
