Important for tourists: Medical services at the seaside are often not covered by the National Health Insurance Fund

The summer season on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is in full swing, but experts remind tourists to be careful if they need medical assistance. Planning a vacation involves not only choosing a hotel but also knowing what to do if your health condition worsens during your stay.

In the largest Bulgarian resort, "Sunny Beach," there are ten medical centers available to vacationers. However, it is important for tourists to know that none of these centers work with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). This means that patients must pay for their examinations and tests on the spot.

This situation puts many people in a difficult position, as they often expect their health insurance to cover treatment costs, just as it does with their primary care physicians back home. Due to the lack of a contract with the NHIF, the prices for services in resorts can be significantly higher than the standard user fees that citizens are accustomed to.

Experts advise tourists to find out in advance about the nearest state hospital or emergency room that works with the Fund if they need more serious medical help. It is also a good idea to check whether your insurance policy or supplementary health insurance contract covers the costs of emergency examinations in private centers.

Before you set off, prepare a small first-aid kit with the most essential medications. Stay informed and prepared so you can spend your vacation peacefully and without unnecessary worries about your health.
