Healthcare Crisis: Major Shortage of Emergency Medicine Specialists in Bulgaria
Bulgaria is facing a serious problem in the healthcare sector. New data from the Ministry of Health show a major shortage of doctors who have specialized in "Emergency Medicine." This situation is creating tension across the country's entire medical system.
According to official statistics, there are only 129 doctors with a qualification in emergency medicine in all of Bulgaria. This number is extremely low for the needs of the population. As a result, many emergency centers and hospitals rely on medical professionals from other specialties or on young doctors who are just beginning their training.
Working in emergency care is known for its difficulty and high level of stress. Doctors often work long shifts and must make quick decisions in life-threatening situations for patients. Due to the high pressure and better opportunities abroad, many Bulgarian specialists choose to leave the country or work in the private sector.
The lack of personnel directly affects the quality of medical services. Patients often face long waits for an ambulance or for an examination in emergency departments. On the other hand, the available medical staff is overworked, which increases the risk of exhaustion and professional burnout.
Experts believe that urgent changes are needed to attract the interest of young doctors to this difficult specialty. Improving working conditions and higher pay are among the main factors that could change the situation. Without these measures, the crisis in emergency care in Bulgaria is likely to deepen in the coming years.
