Important for tourists: Medical services in Sunny Beach are not covered by the National Health Insurance Fund
The summer season on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is in full swing, but tourists should be prepared for certain specifics when in need of medical assistance. In our largest seaside resort, Sunny Beach, there are ten medical centers available to vacationers in case of health issues.
It is important, however, for holidaymakers to know that none of these ten centers work with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). This means that patients cannot use their referrals for free examinations or tests, even if they are health-insured in Bulgaria.
For this reason, all medical services in the resort are paid for on-site according to the price list of the respective private clinics. The costs for a specialist examination or emergency care can be significant, which often surprises unprepared tourists.
Experts advise vacationers to check in advance what the conditions for medical care are in their chosen resort. It is a good idea for tourists to have additional funds set aside for emergencies or to ensure they have valid insurance that covers such expenses.
