Bulgaria is among the EU countries with the shortest working life
New data from the European statistical office Eurostat shows that Bulgaria ranks among the countries in the European Union where people work for the shortest period of time in their lives. The average duration of working life in our country is 34.6 years.
According to the study, only the residents of Romania and Italy have a shorter expected working life. In Romania, the average figure is 32.7 years, and in Italy, it is 33 years. These figures reflect how many years on average a person spends in the labor market, whether employed or self-employed.
Experts note that the duration of working life depends on various factors, including retirement age, the level of employment among young people, and job opportunities for older employees. In many Western and Northern EU countries, this period is significantly longer and often exceeds 40 years.
The data also shows gender differences within the member states. In Bulgaria, men traditionally have a longer expected working life compared to women, which is a trend observed in much of Europe.
These statistics are important for planning social and pension policies in Bulgaria. They help institutions better understand the challenges facing the labor market and seek ways to encourage longer professional careers for citizens.
