Important changes are coming to Bulgaria's energy sector
The Bulgarian government is planning a key reform in the energy sector, which is part of the commitments under the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The change provides for "Mini Maritsa-Iztok" and "TPP Maritsa Iztok 2" to be removed from the structure of the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH).
This reform was agreed upon back in 2025 and aims to optimize the management of state-owned energy companies. Separating the two key enterprises from the holding is an important step towards the liberalization of the country's electricity market.
"Mini Maritsa-Iztok" and "TPP Maritsa Iztok 2" are essential for Bulgaria's energy security, as they provide a large part of coal-fired power generation. The change in their structure is being closely monitored by trade unions and those working in the sector, as it could affect the future development of the region.
The restructuring process is expected to continue over the coming months. The authorities' goal is to ensure greater transparency and efficiency in the operations of state-owned energy companies, while simultaneously meeting the European Union's requirements for green energy.
