Greenpeace: Tankers from Russia's 'shadow fleet' are passing through Bulgaria's economic zone
Greenpeace has issued a serious warning regarding the movement of oil tankers in the Black Sea. According to data from the environmental organization, vessels that are part of Russia's so-called "shadow fleet" are passing through Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone.
These ships are often old and do not meet international safety standards. Experts fear that in the event of an incident or accident, the consequences for the Bulgarian coastline and the Black Sea ecosystem could be catastrophic. The risk of oil spills remains a primary concern for local authorities and environmental organizations.
Meanwhile, revenue from Russian oil exports continues to grow despite international sanctions. Forecasts indicate that revenue for 2025 will reach $158 billion, and it is expected to increase to $191 billion by 2026. These funds are often used to maintain the logistics chains of the "shadow fleet."
The situation presents Bulgaria with complex challenges related to maritime border control and environmental protection. At present, state institutions are closely monitoring the movement of the ships in order to prevent potential environmental damage in Bulgarian waters.
